Primary School Extension
Grade 2 Listed Building
This primary school sits in a beautiful site overlooking a verdant river valley in mid-Devon. While employed at Grainge Architects, Ivan Jordan designed an extension, obtained planing permission and listed building consent, and administered a competitive tender. Grainge Architects ltd were responsible for adminstering the building contract, and their experience and expertise resulted in an excellent outcome.
The brief from the school was the requirement for external play areas for children, which could be monitored, and somehow overcome the difference in level between teaching spaces and the external areas to the rear of the school.
In designing this structure, we not only created a good sized play area on the same level as the classroom, but also made a covered area that parents and park pushchairs under, and a store for sports equipment. We also took the opportunity to change the rear of the building, which was a blank brick wall, building a covered external stair, that turns around a timber cloakroom block. The posts and galvanised frame support a generous overhanging monopitch roof, the whole being an expressive response to a set of pragmatic requirements. the view from the play deck, over lush Devon countryside, is pretty special.
