A New face for a Community Centre
In 2013 and 2014 we designed several proposals for an extension to a community centre in Exeter, St Sidwells, which has thriving cafe. The building is a post-war church, which has been converted to house numerous community groups of many faiths, disciplines and interests. It stands on a busy road in Exeter, St Sidwell's Street, which is an extension to the High Street, but is set back somewhat, and does not benefit from an attractive architecture.
Our brief was create a new frontage that would open up the front elevation, and attract more people up the path through the churchyard. Landscape Architects Westley Design were enlisted to work on the landscaping of the churchyard itself, and make the journey from street to table a pleasurable progression. We designed and presented several options for alterations to the building itself, all of which serve to improve visibility to, from and through the building, enhancing the entrance condition immeasurably, and clarify circulation internally.
