Extension to a Family Home

Why move when you can extend? In the current market making the big move is making less financial sense, and remodeling or extending your existing home could be the only real solution.

Our clients are a young family; fast out growing their suburban-semi, they were looking for a design that would transform their home into modern living spaces.

There is a significant level change separating the ground floor and the garden. Our proposal looks to exploit this; to create an open flowing space that combines a study and kitchen-diner within a split-level space; connecting the ground floor living space with the garden. Bi-folding glazed doors blur the boundaries between inside and out, and allow for family life to easily spill out in to the garden beyond.

Our client intends to undertake the majority of the building work themselves. Therefore for cost effectiveness and build efficiency a timber frame system is proposed. This will reduce the embodied energy in the build whilst also providing high-levels of insulation. A flat green roof will soften the visual impact of the extension from the first floor, whilst providing high levels of insulation for the space below.
