This project, near Exeter, is particularly challenging and exciting. In essence it is the doubling in size of a house on the edge of a conservation area, with a purposeful form that lifts the quality of the entire house significantly.
Designed over 4 storeys, advantage is made of the sloping site to build a wine cellar below a new ground floor with split level Kitchen and dining area. The first and second floors jut out over the garden and the heavy mass of the brickwork appears to float above the glazed ground floor. The design was developed in close consultation with the clients, using drawings, models and 3D model movies. Analysis of the shading effects was carried out to answer questions that were raised at the planning stage, and permission was granted without a committee meeting being necessary.
A competitive tender was undertaken, and a contract awarded in 2011. Work has progressed well. Technical challenges were minimized by extensive detailed information and a lot of site visits from the architect.
At the time of writing, the superstructure is complete and the walls and ceilings of the top storey have been painted. Finishes are being decided upon, and a very high quality kitchen is about to be fitted.
